Ghana has gotten its first visually impaired lady who has done her masters in Criminology and social order at the University of Nairobi in Kenya.

Miss Mahmoud Juliana Afia was born in the Ashanti region of Ghana in the year 1991. She started her basic education at WA school for the blind in the Upper West region of Ghana where she developed the spirit of hard work, determination, dedication and the desire for helping others in society.

She later went to Okuapemman Senior High School where she was always among the best students in her class. No wonder she completed her secondary education with flying colors and proceeded to the University of Ghana. At the University, she majored in Social work and minored in Sociology.

Based on her excellent performance, she came out with first class honors. After her graduation, she did her national service at New Juaben Municipal Assembly, Department of Social Development and completed in 2016.

In September 2016 she was awarded a scholarship by the Mwalimu Nyerere African Union scholarship scheme for persons with disability to do her masters at the University of Nairobi Kenya where she read Criminology and Social Order which is a branch of sociology and completed successfully in 2018.

Despite her disability, Miss Mahmoud did not give up on her education based on the challenges she faced but worked relentlessly to attain her goals in life and also advocating for a state in which persons with disabilities will be given the chance to contribute towards the growth of society and the world as a Whole and their rights and freedom will be respected in the society.

As part of her requirement for the award of Masters of Art in Criminology and Social Order, she has published a research paper which is entitled, Public Perceptions on Community Service Order Programme in Nairobi County-a case study in Makadara community, Kenya.
